Cars are many things beyond merely a means of transport.
Like a beautiful home is a mark of success, similarly a car can be a signifier of achievement. A mobile display of wealth, unlike a mobile home which ironically can have the opposite meaning.
A Rolls Royce is perhaps the epitome of this success.
To arrive in a Rolls Royce is to have arrived.
Or a Ferrari or an Aston Martin, marques which combine luxury but also lean heavily on muscle and outrageous levels of speed – as much as 200 mph which seems a tad excessive.
When I was young boy, I aspired to drive a prestigious car. Walking to school, I used to play a game to myself… which car on any given road, parked or being driven would I settle for in the future when I am a grown up.
I knew all the makes and marques. A Porsche 911 was the ultimate car (and still is for many) and I assumed that I would own such a car.
