As the venue of my debut one-man-show in 1993, The Hen and Chickens Theatre in London makes an indelible mark on me, so returning this week for a one-woman show by the daughter of one of our friends was especially poignant. A happy reminder for me but also a nod to the rapid passing of time.
On the day of my debut, Nikki was away in Hong Kong on a buying trip, and I recall being tearful with anxiety at the prospect of the show ahead of me.
Sitting in the full stalls this week immediately took me back to my big night. I am struck by just how relaxed and carefree the awaiting audience are – in stark contrast to the performer backstage with all her hopes and dreams on the line.
