What is a meme anyway?
Anyone?
I am hazy even though I happen to star in a viral meme which ranked No.1 worldwide on Reddit.
I am also hazy on Reddit. I’m told it’s a powerful website, which can make people’s careers…
Hmmm.
After three decades of doing stand-up comedy, 9 books and thousands of blogs, I don’t know how I should that nowadays I am most recognised for a meme.
A little hollow perhaps or should I be sanguine because all publicity is good publicity. And given that humour is my trade, I should be happy that people are laughing at me, even if it was not intentional on my part.
I can’t explain this photo either which is disappointing because this is what people want to know and frequently ask me.
What was I thinking?
What’s with the facial expression?
I should have known better also. It wasn’t my first trip to Wimbledon with Tom, so I should have realised that lenses would be trained on him and therefore me also. Incidentally, you can’t see these photographers. They are remote with long lenses, and I expect that they have a heads up on which slebs (celebs) are attending and they have a nose for which images might put corn on their table.
Another question I am frequently asked is what are Tom’s thoughts on ‘my’ Emma Watson meme?
I can’t answer this because we have never discussed it, although I now have an idea…
Because today Tom is attending Wimbledon again. A guest of some company or other who will be hoping for another popular photograph to do the rounds.
And I write this at home because I have not been invited to join him. Safer to leave his error strewn old-man out and instead, bring along his younger brother, which is fine by me.
I can watch the tennis on the telly and not have to consider whether it is safe to pick my nose…
But given what happened to me last time, I suspect this will be on the mind of Paddy today.
He will be determined to give the paparazzi nothing. For this, he will need to sit statue still. He will need to be impervious to whoever is around him, or whatever happens on the court.
I hope he enjoys his day and that he manages to emerge unscathed and meme free – which we will know in the days ahead.
Good luck Paddy. You got this.
