Fred and that Brazilian World Cup Win

Last night, the whole world felt relief for the unfortunate Marcelo when Brazil drew level and then went on to win. But the most relieved Brazilian player was hopefully Fred because when Oscar scored – it rendered his cheating penalty null and void.

Like everyone else, I could see that the referee had called it wrong and that this was just a mistake. But what Fred did was pure cheating. An orchestrated attempt to deceive and gain an unfair advantage which was duly awarded and taken.

I love the skill of football – the beautiful game after all – but too much of modern day football is rotting. From cheating Fifa officials to cheating players covered in ink and money – it is too often not an edifying watch and always we concentrate on the wrong problems.

Don’t blame last night’s ref. Blame Fred.
