The Iron Men

How about this for a link to the past…

Back in the day, 1993 – my first Edinburgh Fringe; I was selling out, garnering great reviews and winning awards. On my door at each show was a nice lad who I got to know and like. He was hugely keen on all things show biz and a little in awe of me!

Scroll forward 20 years and having not seen him since, we realise that we have kids at the same primary school. His name is Steve Havers and he runs a successful TV production company behind shows like Escape to the Chateau.

An ardent West Ham fan, Steve has just produced Iron Men – a documentary/homage to the Boleyn Ground – or Upton Park as I knew it – the home of West Ham. Last night, Steve premiered his film at a cinema in Stepney, East London. Slaven Bilic and the entire West Ham first team in attendance in a packed cinema. I am so proud of him and congratulate Steve and his team for getting things done. The film is great and a worthy testament to a small part of London that has given so much hope, hurt and joy to so many generations and millions of people.

And in Edinburgh later this year – Steve will be coming to my show – but he wont be tearing tickets. Not because he is above such a thing, but because my show is free and so there no tickets.

Bloody hell – it’s not just my kids – even my door staff are eclipsing me.
