yesterday was the best day of the year by far

Not wishing to be mawkish but for one reason or another – 2012 was a tough year for me – and 2013 is very welcome.

2013 has started spectularly well.

The first day of 2013 was remarkable.

It bagan with a party at our house that finshed in the small hours and resumed later in the day with the The Impossible being released

that's my boy
that’s my boy

in the UK. It played to a full house at our local cinema while my whole family watched and loved Pitch Perfect. Some friends went along to see The Impossible and we all convened in the foyer afterwards and headed back to my sister’s house for a much needed chilli con carne.

And then in the evening, I published my first novel in ten years.

A Man’s Life – ten years in the writing – available now at smashwords and amazon. Ideally, I would include the book cover here – but my machine is not allowing me to do so. But trust me, it does exist. And I will get to this glitch shortly.

So Jan1 – son launches film and dad launches new novel. Boom!

Jan 2nd is going to be a let down.

I know this and I am prepared.

I have only recently discovered your blogs and have been wrapped up in bed in the early hours of the morning reading them. I saw The Impossible yesterday evening and thoroughly enjoyed. Credit to your son. I’m very much looking forward to reading your book ‘eclipsed’ whenever it is available.

Have a great year, you are in a very privileged era of your life.

I went to see the Impossible the first day it came out and it was absolutely fantastic, Tom was amazing and has a great future ahead of him. His acting was insane. In fact, I’m going to see it again on Sunday with my friend.
    Top job to your son.

Tom was amazing in ‘The Impossible’, I loved his performance, he is a great actor, and I think he is a very humble person, so humble that he has not noticed that he’s very famous 🙂 (at least in Spain) Now, he is one of my favourite actors

Well, like father like son! 🙂 Just 5 words: both of you are GREAT! … you, as a writer, with sure! … Thank for sharing with us ECLIPSED, it´s a chance to know better Tom (and Lucas, because I think now, Tom is brave like Lucas) and this blog will be a joy for the movie fans, for sure. “somewhat famous comedian is being outshone by his more illustrious son” 🙂 … oh, no. You´re the project manager of Tom and the kids, this is the best project! 🙂 … Good luck in the future, all of your family!

What a lovely comment Radu, thank you.
I have just this day finished the ebook of eclipsed – the manuscript has been finished for a week or so – but I have spent the last three days inserting 120 odd photos and having just rewritten the epilogue – I was reminded of what a friend of mine told me about my forthcoming book – “dom it can’t be bitter and it can’t be sad. No one should feel sorry for you. It needs to be written by a cool dad about his cooler son” – which I think is perfect.

I hope you might read it – and if so, you will let me have your thoughts in due course.

Just wanted to say… I’ve just been to see The Impossible & what a truly inspiring, heartbreaking & amazing film. Had me weeping like a baby!! Great cast, all amazing actors but ‘Lucas’ was just incredible, he is so talented!! So much so I’ve been googling for more info about him!! You should be so proud… He will without a doubt be the proud owner of an Oscar :-). X

I have been to see “The Impossible” twice now, it is an extremely moving and captivating movie in which your son, Tom, is apsolutely incredible in. I hope you will pass on my congratulations to him. But I still find myself wanting to watch it again, even after seeing it two times already, and am going to watch it again next Saturday. I was wondering what it is about this movie that is so captivating that makes me want to see it again and again. I feel as if I do not fully take in every thing that has happened and find myself wanting to repeat the, extremely emotional might I add, experience again.

    Hi Dom

Just an errata “The Impossible opened last week in Spain, smashing all Box Office records, taking $10 dollars in 3 days”

I know Spain is in recession but I imagine you meant to say $10million dollars?

Although $10 is quite funny as it stands old chap !

Hi Dom! How I got to reading this post in the first place I really don’t know, but I recognised your name as it’s on the book my brother is currently reading. I can’t remember ever commenting on a website, but I have now read alot of your “eclipsed” posts, which I have to say I’ve found pretty hilarious, and certainly a preferable alternative to exam revision (I guess this is a new form of procrastination that I have found!). When reading I realised I’d seen Tom in Billy Elliot when I went to see it with the family years ago, it was pretty epic, being one of the few plays I’ve enjoyed… what a coincidence. I thought it was quite ironic as well seeing as how this blog goes! As a current 1st year medical student who also was rejected from cambridge, I’d love to know which medical school your friends son accepted in the end? Oh and the impossible was amazing, congratulations on your hard chaperoning work, it really paid off, and good luck with the ebook!

hey rich, what a lovely comment to receive, thank you. Glad you’re enjoying the past posts – my mate’s son ended up at the very creditable Birmingham uni doing maedicine and is loving it.
I hope your studies continue to go well -the real life Lucas is at UCL doing medicine himself.
Do keep an eye out for my ebook which is far better than my blog – but I would say this wouldn’t I?
      V best, dom

    Hi Dom
I saw ‘The Impossible’ last Friday, and cried all the way through, an incredibly moving and fantastic film and so proud of Tom, my friends saw it too, i had tried not to big it up too much because of Tom but i didnt need too, they were so impressed and hadnt realised he would be in every part of the film. He is a star and all credit to you both for making him so grounded. Please congratulate him for me. I look forward to seeing his next film as i am sure it wont be long before his next one. I look forward to reading your latest book too. i miss you all at school. I hope this year proves to be the best yet for you all.
